GEORGIA
FIREFIGHTERS BURN FOUNDATION AWARDS CEREMONY RECOGNIZES SPALDING
COUNTY FIRE DEPARTMENT
The
Georgia Firefighters’ Burn Foundation (GFBF), at its 12th Annual
Recognition and Awards Ceremony, recognized the Spalding County
Fire Department for 20 consecutive years of participation in the
annual “Give Burns the Boot” fundraising drive.
Spalding
County, along with five other fire departments (Clayton County,
DeKalb County, Forest Park, Hapeville and Rockdale County), has
participated in this event since its inception in 1990. There
are now over 100 fire departments that participate each year in
this caring, compassionate and critical fundraiser. The monies
raised through “Give Burns the Boot” drives go directly to the
GFBF and its three-fold mission of:
1)
Educating the public in burn awareness and prevention,
2) Supporting medical facilities in the care of burns in
Georgia, and
3) Assisting burn survivors in their recovery.
To help
celebrate the 20th boot drive campaign milestone were the 2009
Boot Drive Ambassadors: Winson Chen, now 26, who was injured in
a fiery automobile crash at the age of 21; Shenetrics Glynn, now
20, who was involved at the age of 6 in a tragic accident cause
by a water heater explosion; and Hayden Braxton, an enthusiastic
11-year-old who pulled boiling hot water off a counter at the
age of 2. These are the very personal faces and stories of burn
victims who have benefitted from the funds raised by the Georgia
Firefighters Burn Foundation “Give Burns the Boot” campaign and
the individual firefighters who give unselfishly of their time
and effort. All three ambassadors are now actively involved in
GFBF programs and camps, willingly supporting the labors of the
firefighters who helped save their lives.
Chief Samuel C. “Chipper” Gardner accepted the award on behalf
of the men and women of the Spalding County Fire Department and
stated, “The firefighters of all of the participating fire
departments are the ones being recognized. They are the ones out
there asking people to help out the children that are burn
victims and to support burn prevention programs. These
firefighters see on a daily basis the tragedy and trauma caused
by fire and are doing everything they can to prevent fires and
burns and, if need be, to care for those affected by fire.”
The Spalding County Fire Department also supports the GFBF
through the recycling of aluminum cans collected at all of
Spalding County’s recycling centers. The monies raised through
this program also go directly toward helping burn survivors.
Chief Gardner thanked the members of the both the present and
past Boards of Commissioners, along with County Manager William
Wilson, for allowing the Fire Department to participate in this
very worthwhile program.
